Sculptra vs. Radiesse: Choosing a Biostimulator

6 min readBy

Sculptra and Radiesse are two of the best-known collagen biostimulators — injectables that prompt your skin to build its own collagen rather than simply filling space. They're often mentioned together, but they're different materials with different strengths. Here's how to tell them apart.

What They Have in Common

Both are biostimulators: instead of (or in addition to) adding instant volume, they act as a scaffold that signals your fibroblast cells to produce new collagen. Results build gradually and look natural because the improvement is partly your own tissue. Both are popular for age-related volume loss and skin quality.

Sculptra (Poly-L-Lactic Acid)

  • How it works: Pure collagen stimulation — it adds almost no immediate volume. The material is gradually absorbed while your skin lays down new collagen over weeks to months.
  • Best for: Broad, gradual restoration of facial volume and skin quality — hollow cheeks, temples, and overall age-related thinning.
  • Cadence: Usually a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart; results continue improving over months and can last around two years.

Radiesse (Calcium Hydroxylapatite)

  • How it works: Provides immediate volume from the gel carrier *plus* longer-term collagen stimulation as the calcium microspheres do their work.
  • Best for: Deeper structural support and contouring — the jawline, chin, and deeper folds — where you want some instant result alongside collagen building. It's also used for hand rejuvenation.
  • Cadence: Often fewer sessions than Sculptra because of the immediate effect.

How to Choose

- Want gradual, all-over improvement and skin quality? Sculptra tends to fit. - Want immediate structure and contouring plus collagen over time? Radiesse tends to fit. - Many plans use one, the other, or a combination with traditional filler — depending on which areas need volume now versus collagen over time.

The Physician's Role

Both are advanced treatments that reward an injector who understands facial anatomy and the science of collagen — which is where Dr. Taborga's background (a Master's in Stem Cell Biology alongside his medical training) is a natural fit. The right choice depends on your face, not a trend.
