Why Do We Use Salmon Sperm? The Science Behind PDRN & PN

5 min readBy

"Salmon sperm" is the viral nickname for PDRN and PN treatments, but there is much more to the story than a catchy headline. While the name might sound unconventional, the science behind using DNA fragments is a fundamental pillar of modern regenerative medicine. By working at a cellular level, these treatments help the skin repair itself naturally, proving that the results are far more sophisticated than the name suggests.

Why Salmon DNA?

In regenerative medicine, we use DNA fragments extracted from salmon because they are very similar to human DNA, lowering the risk of an immune response (rejection) when injected or applied to the skin.

  • PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): Short DNA chains mainly used for wound healing and tissue repair.
  • Polynucleotides (PN): Long DNA chains that provide structural support and long-term skin biostimulation.

Why It Works in Aesthetic Procedures

Fragmented DNA acts as a biostimulator. Unlike fillers that simply "fill" space, PDRN/PN stimulates the skin to repair itself. These treatments are commonly used for:

  • Improving skin elasticity and texture
  • Reducing fine lines and "crepey" skin (especially around the eyes)
  • Accelerating healing after more aggressive treatments like laser resurfacing or microneedling
  • Reducing inflammation and redness (including rosacea)

At the Molecular Level

The real magic happens when fragmented DNA binds to cell receptors, triggering the following changes:

  • Decreasing the inflammatory response, leading to skin regeneration
  • Stimulating micro-blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to the skin
  • Becoming a food source for fibroblasts — the cells responsible for collagen production — allowing improved growth and multiplication

The Salvage Pathway

Cells can create DNA from scratch (de novo synthesis), but this requires significant energy. PDRN provides a shortcut called the "Salvage Pathway." By delivering pre-formed DNA fragments directly to the tissue, the cells can "recycle" them to repair their own damaged DNA and membranes with much less effort.

This is the science behind one of the most exciting frontiers in aesthetic medicine — not covering up signs of aging, but helping your skin regenerate from within.
