How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last? Factors That Affect Longevity

6 min readBy

One of the most common questions patients ask during consultations is: "How long will this last?" The honest answer is: it depends — on the product, the location, your metabolism, and how you care for your skin.

General Longevity Expectations by Area

Different facial areas metabolize filler at different rates, primarily due to movement and vascularity:

Lips: 4–8 months The lips move constantly — eating, speaking, laughing. This high activity accelerates filler breakdown.

Nasolabial folds: 6–12 months Moderate movement; thicker filler products can extend longevity.

Cheeks: 12–18 months Less movement and thicker products used for structural support make cheek filler among the most long-lasting.

Jawline: 12–18 months Structural filler in a less mobile area has excellent longevity.

Temples: 12–24 months Deep placement over bone with minimal movement; tends to last very well.

Tear troughs: 9–12 months Thin skin and movement near the eye affects longevity.

Chin: 12–18 months Structural filler placed deep has good longevity.

Why Filler Duration Varies Between Patients

Metabolism: Patients with faster metabolisms break down hyaluronic acid more quickly. This is why some patients feel their filler "disappears" in 4 months while others still see results at 18 months.

Lifestyle factors: - High-intensity exercise increases blood flow and can accelerate filler breakdown - Sun exposure and smoking damage collagen and may affect surrounding tissue - Poor sleep and high stress increase inflammatory markers

Injection depth and technique: Filler placed at the correct depth and plane integrates better and lasts longer than superficially placed product.

Product selection: Different hyaluronic acid products have different molecular weights and cross-linking patterns. Denser, more cross-linked products (like Juvederm Voluma) last longer than softer, more hydrating products.

Amount used: More product, within reason, tends to last longer.

Why Filler May Appear to Last Longer Over Time

Many patients report that after repeated treatments, they need less product to maintain results. This is real: HA fillers attract water, providing ongoing hydration. Additionally, some fillers may stimulate modest collagen production in surrounding tissue.

Neuromodulator Longevity

While not a filler, Botox/Dysport longevity follows different patterns: - Typically 3–4 months - Longer with consistent treatment history (some patients eventually go 5–6 months) - Shorter in very active muscles or high-metabolism patients - Shorter in areas with high movement (like lips for lip flip)

Maximizing Your Results

  • Sun protection — UV damage accelerates skin aging and may affect filler integration
  • Quality skincare — retinoids and antioxidants support the surrounding tissue
  • Maintain a stable weight — significant weight fluctuations affect facial fat distribution
  • Stay hydrated — HA fillers attract water; better hydration supports the filler's function
  • Schedule maintenance appointments — treating before complete dissolution maintains better results than starting over from scratch
