Botox vs. Dysport: Which Is Right for You?
If you're considering wrinkle-smoothing injections, you've likely come across two names: Botox and Dysport. Both are FDA-approved neuromodulators that temporarily relax the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — like frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead creases. But they're not identical.
How They Work
Both products contain botulinum toxin type A, which blocks nerve signals to targeted muscles. When the muscle can't contract as strongly, the overlying skin smooths out. The effect is temporary, typically lasting 3–4 months.
Key Differences
Onset Time: Dysport tends to kick in faster — many patients notice results within 2–3 days, while Botox may take 5–7 days to reach full effect.
Spread: Dysport has a slightly broader diffusion pattern, meaning it spreads more once injected. This can be advantageous for treating larger areas like the forehead but requires precise technique near smaller, more delicate areas.
Dosing: Dysport uses different units than Botox. Roughly 2.5–3 units of Dysport equal 1 unit of Botox, so the numbers on your treatment plan will look different even though the effect is comparable.
Longevity: Results are similar for most patients, though some report Dysport wearing off slightly sooner. Individual metabolism plays a significant role.
Which Should You Choose?
The honest answer: it depends on your anatomy, your goals, and your injector's expertise. Dr. Taborga evaluates each patient individually and recommends the product that will deliver the most natural, balanced result for their specific facial structure.
Some patients prefer one over the other based on personal experience. If you've only tried one, it may be worth experimenting with the other to see which you prefer.
The Importance of Your Injector
More important than which product you choose is *who* is injecting it. A skilled physician understands the complex anatomy of the face and can place the product precisely where it needs to go — avoiding complications and ensuring natural movement is preserved.
