The Ideal Skincare Routine for Aesthetic Patients

6 min readBy

One of the most common questions patients ask is: "What should I be using at home?" It's a great question — because even the best in-office treatments will deliver suboptimal results if your daily skincare routine isn't supporting your skin health.

The Non-Negotiables

Regardless of your age, skin type, or aesthetic goals, four products form the foundation of an effective routine:

1. Sunscreen (SPF 30+, broad spectrum) This is the single most important product you can use. UV radiation drives 80% of visible skin aging. Apply every morning, rain or shine, 365 days a year. Reapply every 2 hours with sun exposure.

2. Retinoid (Vitamin A derivative) Retinoids are the most evidence-backed anti-aging ingredient available without a prescription. They accelerate cell turnover, boost collagen production, and improve skin texture and tone. Start with a low concentration and build tolerance gradually.

3. Vitamin C serum A quality L-ascorbic acid serum provides antioxidant protection, brightens skin, and supports collagen synthesis. Apply in the morning under sunscreen for synergistic UV protection.

4. Gentle cleanser Your cleanser should remove dirt, oil, and sunscreen effectively without stripping your skin barrier. If your skin feels tight or squeaky after washing, your cleanser is too harsh.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Hyaluronic acid serum — Excellent for hydration, especially in dry climates or for patients on retinoids
  • Niacinamide — Reduces inflammation, minimizes pores, and supports barrier function
  • Peptide serums — Can support collagen production as a complement to retinoids

What You Can Skip

  • Collagen supplements — Oral collagen is broken down by digestion; the evidence for skin benefits is weak
  • Jade rollers and gua sha — Feel nice, provide temporary lymphatic drainage, but don't change skin structure
  • Most "clean beauty" products — "Natural" doesn't mean effective, and synthetic doesn't mean harmful

Timing Matters

Morning: Cleanser → Vitamin C → Moisturizer → Sunscreen Evening: Cleanser → Retinoid → Moisturizer

Wait 5–10 minutes between retinoid application and moisturizer to maximize absorption.

How Skincare Supports In-Office Treatments

Patients who maintain a consistent skincare routine see better, longer-lasting results from treatments like fillers, Botox, PRP, and microneedling. Think of it as maintaining the foundation while we enhance the architecture.
