Post-Treatment Recovery: 10 Tips for Optimal Results

6 min readBy

You've invested in yourself with an aesthetic treatment — now let's make sure you get the best possible results. Proper aftercare isn't complicated, but it does make a meaningful difference in your outcome.

10 Essential Recovery Tips

1. Keep Your Head Elevated For the first night after filler injections, sleep with your head slightly elevated (an extra pillow works). This minimizes swelling and helps the product settle evenly.

2. Avoid Touching the Treatment Area Resist the urge to press, massage, or poke at treated areas for at least 24 hours (unless your provider specifically instructs massage, as with certain fillers). Touching can displace product and introduce bacteria.

3. Skip the Gym for 24–48 Hours Strenuous exercise increases blood flow and blood pressure, which can worsen swelling and increase bruising risk. Light walking is fine; save the intense workout for day 3.

4. Avoid Alcohol for 24 Hours Alcohol is a vasodilator — it opens blood vessels and can increase bruising and swelling. One glass of wine won't be catastrophic, but abstaining gives you the best chance of a smooth recovery.

5. Apply Cold Compresses (Not Ice Directly) If you experience swelling, wrap a cold pack in a clean cloth and apply it gently for 10-minute intervals. Never apply ice directly to skin — especially after filler, as extreme cold can affect the product.

6. Stay Hydrated Hyaluronic acid fillers attract water, so staying well-hydrated helps the product integrate beautifully with your tissue. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily in the first week.

7. Avoid Heat Exposure Saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms, and prolonged sun exposure should be avoided for 48 hours. Heat increases swelling and can affect how neuromodulators settle.

8. Be Patient With Results Fillers may look slightly over-corrected for the first 3–5 days due to swelling. Botox takes 5–7 days (sometimes up to 14) to reach full effect. Judge your final results at the 2-week mark.

9. Sleep on Your Back For the first 2 nights after facial treatment, sleeping face-up prevents uneven pressure on treated areas. If you're a side sleeper, a travel pillow can help keep you on your back.

10. Follow Up as Scheduled Your 2-week follow-up isn't optional — it's when Dr. Taborga assesses your results and determines if any refinement is needed. Most patients are thrilled with their results, but small adjustments can make a good outcome great.
