Med Spa vs. Dermatologist vs. Plastic Surgeon

6 min readBy

"Should I go to a med spa, a dermatologist, or a plastic surgeon?" It's one of the most common questions new aesthetic patients ask — and the honest answer is that it depends on what you want done. Here's how to think about it.

The Three Options, in Plain Terms

  • Med spa (medical spa): A clinic offering non-surgical aesthetic treatments — Botox, fillers, facial harmonization, biostimulators, skin treatments. Quality varies enormously depending on who supervises and performs the treatments.
  • Dermatologist: A physician specializing in skin, hair, and nails. Great for medical skin conditions (acne, rosacea, skin cancer screening) and many cosmetic skin treatments.
  • Plastic surgeon: A surgeon trained to perform operations — facelifts, rhinoplasty, liposuction — as well as injectables. The right choice when you need actual surgery.

When to See Each

  • Choose a dermatologist when your concern is medical — a suspicious mole, persistent acne, a rash, or a skin disease.
  • Choose a plastic surgeon when you want a surgical result that injectables can't deliver — for example, removing significant excess skin.
  • Choose a med spa for non-surgical, expression-and-volume treatments: softening lines with Botox, restoring volume with filler, balancing the face with harmonization.

The Catch With Med Spas

The term "med spa" isn't tightly regulated, and that's where patients get into trouble. Some are run by experienced physicians; others let minimally trained staff inject with little oversight. Because injectables are medical procedures — performed near nerves, vessels, and muscles — the qualifications of the person treating you matter more than the spa's décor.

Why a Physician-Led Med Spa Is Different

A physician-led practice combines the comfortable, focused experience of a med spa with the medical judgment of a doctor. At Captivate Medical Wellness, every treatment is directed personally by Dr. Marcelo Taborga, MD — a board-certified internist with specialized training in facial harmonization. That means:

- A provider who understands your overall health, not just the surface - Anatomical expertise that lowers the risk of complications - Honest guidance about when a treatment isn't right for you

The Bottom Line

There's no single "best" choice — there's a best choice for your specific goal. For non-surgical injectables and facial balancing, a physician-led med spa offers an ideal middle ground: medical safety without the operating room.
