GLP-1 Injections: What to Expect
Most GLP-1 medications for weight loss, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are given as a once-weekly self-injection under the skin. For many patients the experience is quicker and more comfortable than they expect. Your physician demonstrates proper technique in person; this is a general overview of what to anticipate, not step-by-step instructions.
How often and how is it given?
GLP-1 weight-loss medications are typically administered once a week as a subcutaneous injection, meaning into the fatty tissue just under the skin rather than into muscle or vein. Many come as a pre-filled pen designed to be simple to use. The actual injection takes only moments. Because technique matters for comfort and safety, your physician will show you how to do it correctly and answer your questions before you do it on your own.
What does it feel like?
Patients are often surprised by how minor it is. The needle is small and fine, and many people describe little more than a quick pinch or nothing at all. General comfort tips your physician may discuss:
- Rotating the injection site week to week - Letting the medication reach room temperature when advised - Relaxing the area rather than tensing it - Choosing a consistent day so it becomes routine
Mild redness or tenderness at the site can occur and usually settles quickly. Anything that seems unusual should be reviewed with your physician. Many patients tell us the anticipation beforehand was far worse than the injection itself, and that within a few weeks it becomes an unremarkable part of their routine that takes less than a minute.
Building it into a New York routine
A once-weekly schedule fits well into a busy Manhattan life. Many patients pick a quiet morning, perhaps a Sunday before the week ramps up, so it becomes a small, predictable habit rather than something to remember each day. Keeping your supplies organized at home in the Flatiron District or wherever you live makes the routine effortless over time.
Storage basics
GLP-1 medications generally need to be stored properly to stay effective, and your physician and pharmacy will give you specific guidance for your product. In general terms:
- Many products are kept refrigerated, especially before first use - Some allow room-temperature storage for a limited window once in use - Pens should be protected from light and extreme temperatures - Always follow the specific instructions provided with your medication
Do not improvise storage; if you are ever unsure, ask your physician rather than guessing.
Why supervision still matters
Even though you give the injection yourself, GLP-1 therapy is physician-supervised from start to finish. Your doctor confirms the medication is appropriate, teaches technique, monitors for side effects such as nausea that may occur, and adjusts the plan over time. GLP-1 medications are prescription treatments that are not appropriate for everyone, and eligibility is determined at consultation.
